The Home Depot: An Ongoing Commitment To FSC

In 2011 The Home Depot announced that 100 percent of the framing lumber would be from FSC-certified sources for all of their 41 San Francisco Bay Area stores. And they committed to doing so at the same cost as non-certified wood. Also carrying the FSC logo are certain plywood items, doors, mouldings and more.

The Home Depot made this commitment so customers would have access to environmentally responsible FSC-certified wood without paying specialty prices. Because of The Home Depot’s volumes and a partnership with Mendocino Redwood Company, they are able to keep costs down for consumers in San Francisco.

As significant as this commitment is, it was just the latest in a long stream of efforts by The Home Depot to promote responsible forest management. For example, since 1999 The Home Depot has shifted more than 90 percent of its cedar purchases to second- and third-growth forests in the U.S. Today The Home Depot sells more FSC-certified wood than any company in North America and 94 percent of all their wood sold comes from North America.

The Forest Stewardship Council greatly appreciates The Home Depot’s deep commitment to responsible forest management, as well as their Platinum sponsorship of Design & Build with FSC at Greenbuild 2013.
