Fencing

Intro

Mendocino Redwood fencing is the standard for high quality, natural wood fencing in the Western U.S. The durability and workability of Mendocino Redwood make it the perfect material, plus homeowners and do-it-yourselfers have several options for building the ideal redwood fence.

Redwood fences can be “stick-built” from the ground up, by setting posts, attaching rails, and mounting fence boards. Alternatively, pre-assembled panels can be attached to posts to create a beautiful, sturdy redwood fence. In addition, redwood fences can be completed with a variety of accessories to add individual style to basic or elaborate designs.

Fence Boards

Redwood fence boards have been used for decades throughout the West to build long-lasting, durable fences. Besides their well-known durability, Mendocino Redwood fence boards are a good-looking alternative to chain link, block or composite fencing. Mendocino Redwood fence boards are offered in a variety of styles and dimensions, including:

  • Dog Ear: The corners at the top of each board are trimmed at a 45 degree angle.
  • Flat Top: A regular rectangular board with a flat top.
  • Ridge & Valley: Each board has one side with a ridge and one side with a valley, enabling boards to slot together with no visible gap.

Mendocino fence boards, made of real redwood, are available in two grades:

  • Construction Heart: All heartwood grade containing some knots of varying sizes and other slight imperfections.
  • Construction Common: Similar characteristics as Construction Heart, but contains a mix of heartwood and sapwood.

Posts & Rails

Posts and rails are the building blocks from which a durable, “stick-built” fence is constructed. Available in a variety of grades and dimensions:

  • Construction Heart: All heartwood grade containing some knots of varying sizes and other slight imperfections.
  • Construction Common: Similar characteristics as Construction Heart, but contains a mix of heartwood and sapwood.
  • Merchantable: Economical grade containing sapwood in variable amounts, and allowing slightly larger knots than construction grades; holes limited to size of knots. Allows for some checking, splitting, and other manufacturing flaws.

PRE-ASSEMBLED PANELS

Easily attached to posts, Mendocino Redwood pre-assembled panels may be painted or stained or left to weather naturally. Available in the following styles:

  • Lattice Top: Privacy lattice style with ridge and valley pickets; mix of heartwood and sapwood. Available in 6’ high x 8’ wide and 4’ high x 8’ wide dimensions.
  • Dog Ear: 1”x6” redwood dog-ear pickets form the backbone of this hard-working panel. Available in Construction Common as well as Construction Heart grades, in a 6’ high x 8’ wide dimension.

FENCE ACCESSORIES

After assembling the main components of a beautiful, functional Mendocino Redwood fence, it’s time to add fence accessories. Fence accessories made of real Mendocino Redwood perfectly complement picket, panel, or custom redwood fence styles. Mendocino Redwood fence accessories are manufactured for quality and function. The following fence accessories are available:

  • Gates: Redwood fence gates are available in lattice top and dog-ear styles.
  • Kickboards: Building your new fence with a redwood kickboard creates an attractive framed look and will provide longer life by protecting the fence boards from ground contact. 2″x6″ Construction Heart rough kickboards are commonly used, and are available in 8′ and 12′ lengths.
  • Trim: 1″x1″ redwood trim can be attached between fence boards and posts, and along fence rails for extra privacy and a neater, finished appearance for your new fence.
  • Post Caps: Finish off your fence with decorative redwood post caps. Styles and sizes vary by store.
