Mendocino Redwood Company and Humboldt Redwood Company participated in sponsoring last week’s Redwood Science Symposiumat the University of California, Santa Cruz. We would like to thank everyone that made this event possible.
The Redwood Science Symposium began on Tuesday, June 21st with two field tours participants could choose to attend. One tour focused on active redwood timber management while the second tour allowed participants to traverse the range of redwood forest conditions from the old growth of Henry Cowell State Park.
The Redwood Science Symposium continued on Wednesday, June 22nd with Opening Remarks and a series of speakers, including Ron Jarvis from The Home Depot. Educational sessions began after lunch and focused on topics including Watershed Processes, Ecology and Forest Health. Robert Douglas from Mendocino Redwood Company presented on the topic of “Post-fire Response of Coast Redwood One Year After the Mendocino Lightning Complex Fires”.
The symposium wrapped up on Thursday, June 23rd with continued educational sessions focusing on such topics as Economics and Policy, and Monitoring. Partial funding for the symposium came from a grant written to encourage collaboration among the state’s leading universities, which collaborated to organize the symposium. Sponsors included: Big Creek Lumber, California Board of Forestry, California Forestry Association, California Redwood Association, California State Parks, Esri, Green Diamond Resource Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, The Nature Conservancy, Northern California Society of American Foresters, Save the Redwoods League, USDA Forest Service and PSW Research Station.
