At Mendocino Forest Products, environmental stewardship is more than a catchphrase; it’s a way of life. Through our sister company, Mendocino Redwood Company, we source our 
Mendocino® brand of redwood lumber products from forests managed in a sustainable manner. And while you may be aware of our commitment to responsible forestry, you may not be aware of just how far we go to rehabilitate and protect our forests.
Of all the things California is known for, its redwood forests are perhaps the most spectacular. The Coast redwood is the tallest living thing on earth and thousands of visitors come to California state parks each year to view these majestic trees. Some of the trees standing today began as seedlings over 2,000 years ago. However, the history of redwood has not always been positive. As a company we are committed to doing things differently to ensure our redwood forestlands continue to grow and thrive.
Our wood products come from forests that are carefully managed to ensure their continued growth. In fact, each year we grow more than we harvest. Other eco-friendly forestry practices we employ include:
- We protect all trees meeting our old growth definition either as individual trees or as a stand of trees.
- We do not use clearcutting as a harvesting method.
- We replant thousands of redwood and Douglas-fir seedlings each year.
- Our wildlife biologists conduct annual surveys for sensitive plant and animal species found on our forestlands.
In addition, since 2000 the forestlands of Mendocino Redwood Company have been certified to the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). A non-profit, non-governmental organization, FSC certification and forestry management standards are widely considered to be among the most stringent in the world.
